Roasted Chickpeas and Fiber Content

Roasted chickpeas fiber comes to about 5 grams per ounce in plain, salted versions, nearly six times what the same ounce of potato chips provides. Sweet coatings like honey can cut that to 2 grams, so the flavor you pick matters.

Plain roasted chickpeas are one of the highest fiber crunchy snacks you can buy, with about 5 grams per ounce. The twist is that the sweet flavors on the same shelf can carry less than half that.

Roasted chickpeas fiber comes straight from the bean, and roasting simply drives out water. Add a coating of sugar or chocolate, and each ounce holds fewer chickpeas.

Roasted chickpeas fiber, brand by brand

USDA FoodData Central holds brand records for many roasted chickpea snacks. Here’s how a typical serving of each compares:

Snack (serving)CaloriesFiberProteinSugarsSodium
Pulse Original (1 oz, 28 g)1105 g5 g3 g115 mg
Gold Emblem Sea Salt (1 oz, 28 g)1205 g6 g2 g95 mg
Biena Milk Chocolate (1 oz, 28 g)1404 g4 g6 g added110 mg
Saffron Road Honey Roasted (1/4 cup, 30 g)1302 g4 g12 g (11 g added)85 mg
Potato chips, plain, USDA (1 oz, 28 g)1510.9 g1.8 gNot listed149 mg

The plain and sea salt versions sit at 5 grams, about 18% of the FDA’s 28 gram Daily Value. The honey roasted bag drops to 2 grams, with 11 grams of added sugar.

Potato chips make the gap obvious. An ounce of plain chips brings less than a gram of fiber and more fat than any chickpea snack on the list.

Why roasting concentrates the fiber

Boiled chickpeas are mostly water. USDA lists them at 7.6 grams of fiber per 100 grams, while dry raw chickpeas come to 12.2 grams.

Roasting pushes cooked chickpeas back toward that dry state. Pulse’s record works out to about 17.9 grams of fiber per 100 grams, higher than either, because a little oil and salt replace the water and the fiber stays put.

That’s also why roasted chickpeas feel so filling for their size. A small handful carries the fiber of a much larger scoop of cooked beans.

What an ounce looks like

Most bags use a 1 ounce serving, which is 28 grams. In practice that’s a small handful, roughly a quarter cup, and it disappears faster than you’d think.

Because the snack is so crunchy and light, it’s easy to eat two or three servings straight from a large bag. That would bring 10 to 15 grams of fiber at once, which is a lot for anyone not used to beans.

Pouring a single portion into a small bowl keeps the numbers predictable. Snack sized bags do the same job if you prefer them.

Crunchy chickpeas fiber per calorie

Fiber per 100 calories shows how much of a snack’s energy comes with fiber:

  • Plain boiled chickpeas: about 4.6 grams
  • Pulse Original roasted: about 4.5 grams
  • Gold Emblem Sea Salt: about 4.2 grams
  • Biena Milk Chocolate: about 2.9 grams
  • Saffron Road Honey Roasted: about 1.5 grams
  • Plain potato chips: about 0.6 grams

Plain roasted chickpeas almost match boiled chickpeas, which is unusual for a packaged snack. The sweet versions slide down the list as sugar takes up more of each bite.

Comparing chickpea snacks, bean chips and other crunchy options? Our comparison charts line up the main choices side by side.

Myth vs fact: roasted chickpeas

Myth: Roasting destroys the fiber, so roasted chickpeas are just a crunchy treat.

Fact: Fiber holds up to roasting. Plain roasted chickpeas list about 5 grams per ounce, more per gram than boiled chickpeas because the water is gone.

Myth: Any chickpea snack counts as a high fiber food.

Fact: Coatings change the picture. Saffron Road’s honey roasted chickpeas list 2 grams of fiber per serving, below the 10% Daily Value mark.

Roasted chickpeas as plant protein chips

Plain roasted chickpeas bring 5 to 6 grams of protein per ounce in these records. Harvard’s Nutrition Source describes legumes as a source of protein along with folate, iron and phosphorus.

Pulse lists 1.8 milligrams of iron per ounce, about 10% of the Daily Value. Combined with the fiber, that makes a single ounce a more complete snack than most chips or crackers.

Roasted chickpeas are also naturally free of gluten, nuts and dairy in their plain form, which makes them easy to share at school, work or a party. Flavored versions can add milk, as Biena’s chocolate coating does, so check the ingredients if allergies matter.

For a bigger protein boost, mix roasted chickpeas with a few nuts or seeds. The Dietary Guidelines list an ounce of almonds at 3.5 grams of fiber, so a half and half handful still lands above 4 grams.

How they compare with other high fiber snacks

Mayo Clinic’s fiber chart lists 3 cups of air popped popcorn at 3.5 grams of fiber. An ounce of plain roasted chickpeas beats that in a much smaller volume.

Popcorn wins if you want a big bowl to graze on, since 3 cups is a lot of food. Roasted chickpeas win if you want fiber and protein in a pocket sized portion.

Rotating the two keeps snacking interesting without giving up fiber.

Against an ounce of plain potato chips, an ounce of plain roasted chickpeas brings about four more grams of fiber, three to four more grams of protein and 30 to 40 fewer calories. Few snack swaps change that many numbers at once.

Roasting a can at home, counted

Say you drain and rinse a 15 ounce can of chickpeas, toss them with a teaspoon of oil and your favorite spices, and roast them until crisp. USDA lists a cup of canned, rinsed chickpeas at 9.6 grams of fiber.

A typical can holds about 1.5 cups once drained, so the whole tray comes to roughly 14 grams of fiber. Split into four snack portions, each one brings about 3.5 grams for well under 100 calories plus the oil.

Pat the chickpeas dry before roasting, spread them in a single layer and give them enough time to crisp all the way through. They soften in a sealed container, so they’re best within a day or two.

Ways to use roasted chickpeas beyond snacking

Roasted chickpeas also work as a crunchy topping. Using them in place of croutons, fried onions or crackers adds fiber to a dish that would otherwise have little texture or very little bean.

  • Salad topper: scatter a quarter cup over greens instead of croutons
  • Soup garnish: add a handful to tomato, squash or lentil soup just before serving
  • Grain bowl crunch: sprinkle over rice, quinoa or farro bowls
  • Yogurt bowl: try a lightly sweet version over plain yogurt with fruit
  • Trail mix base: combine with nuts, seeds and a few dried fruits

Each of these swaps adds a few grams of fiber without changing the rest of the recipe. They also keep a familiar dish feeling new.

Store bought or homemade?

Store bought roasted chickpeas are drier and crunchier than most homemade batches, and they keep for weeks in a sealed bag. That convenience is worth a lot if you snack on the go.

Homemade versions cost less and let you set the oil, salt and seasoning. They’re a little softer and need to be eaten within a day or two.

On fiber, the two are close once you compare by weight. The store version simply has less water left in it, so a 1 ounce portion carries a bit more.

Sodium, sugar and what to watch

Plain roasted chickpeas are moderate in sodium, at 95 to 115 milligrams per ounce in these records. That’s 4 to 5% of the FDA’s 2,300 milligram Daily Value.

Added sugar is the bigger issue in flavored bags. Saffron Road’s honey roasted version lists 11 grams of added sugar, 22% of the FDA’s 50 gram Daily Value, in a quarter cup.

Biena’s milk chocolate chickpeas land in between, with 6 grams of added sugar and 4 grams of fiber. Treat them as a dessert that happens to bring fiber rather than an everyday snack.

Roasted chickpeas and your gut

Harvard’s Nutrition Source notes that legumes can cause gas and bloating in some people. Because roasted chickpeas are so concentrated, a few handfuls can add up to more fiber than you expect.

Mayo Clinic recommends increasing fiber gradually over a few weeks and drinking plenty of fluids. An ounce at a time, with a glass of water, is a comfortable starting point.

If your gut is sensitive to beans, our gut health guides walk you through adding them back step by step.

A quick decision rule for picking a bag

  • If fiber is the goal: choose plain, sea salt or savory flavors with 5 grams per ounce
  • If sugar matters: skip honey and chocolate coatings, or treat them as dessert
  • If you snack a lot: roast your own from a can and control the oil and salt
  • If you want volume: pair a small handful with a bowl of air popped popcorn

Any of these choices keeps the chickpea doing the work. The less coating between you and the bean, the more fiber each ounce delivers.

Roasted chickpeas: common questions

Are roasted chickpeas high in fiber?

Plain ones are. Pulse and Gold Emblem both list 5 grams per ounce, about 18% of the Daily Value.

Do roasted chickpeas have more fiber than boiled chickpeas?

Per gram, yes, because the water is removed. Plain roasted chickpeas work out to about 18 grams per 100 grams, compared with 7.6 grams for boiled.

Do flavored roasted chickpeas have less fiber?

Sweet flavors often do. Saffron Road’s honey roasted chickpeas list 2 grams per quarter cup, compared with 5 grams in plain versions.

How much protein is in roasted chickpeas?

About 5 to 6 grams per ounce in plain roasted chickpeas.

Are roasted chickpeas healthier than potato chips?

For fiber and protein, yes. An ounce of plain potato chips has under 1 gram of fiber, versus about 5 grams in plain roasted chickpeas.

Can roasted chickpeas cause gas?

They can, since legumes cause gas for some people. Start with an ounce and drink water with them.

How long do homemade roasted chickpeas stay crunchy?

They’re crispest on the day you make them and soften within a day or two in a sealed container.
